Papa

My sweet Papa Tootie (my dad’s dad) passed away this weekend. I flew into Abilene, Texas on Monday and will spend the week here with my family, including my Granny, his wife and love of 66 years.

A father of four sons, skilled carpenter and homebuilder, dedicated follower of his faith and lover of his family, Weldon Warnick King was a good man and will be missed by many.

It’s a bittersweet time — the reflection on a life well-lived, the reunion of people apart for years (even decades) and the gift of a few unexpected days with close family.

Rest in peace, Papa. I love you and will miss your kind and playful spirit. Your life and example make me proud.

  2. Hi Beth–
I know we don’t “know” each other, even in electronic terms, as I comment only sporadically, but want to extend sympathy/empathy. Your post reminds me of my own beloved grandpas. Their deaths were a bittersweet time, indeed. Wishing you peace and the ability to be fully present.

  4. A dear friend of mine died last week after a year of illness. I travelled to be with her during her illness (I moved away 14 years ago) and spent several weeks with her over the course of her illness. Now that she is gone, one of the unexpected blessings I find is that I have reconnected with other friends that are still living there.

I hope you find your own unexpected blessings in this time.
